What's It Worth?

We found a chess set we really like. However we have no real knowledge of its worth and would love some thoughts and input on its authenticity (i.e. is it old? is the board also moro style? etc.) and any knowledge about its approximate value. So please drop us a comment.
We're quite sure the black pieces are made with calabaw horn because of the feel and look of them.

Bottom of the table topThe table base is made from a single piece of wood. It is heavy!

Are you sure that the White pieces are made of horn, too? Might be bone, too.

No, they seem like wood to me on the second look. I would rather recommend a horn and bone set. They pop up at eBay occasionally.

Here's an album with a lot of Moro sets: http://picasaweb.google.nl/thechesscollectors/Moro# The set in the 4th picture is one in bone and horn like the "Anonymous" collector was talking about, though the knights are much more basic in this set. I would also say the 2-tone set in the 3rd picture is very high quality. Really most of the Moro sets in this album are nicer than the most common one's you'll see. I don't know. I like the set in question. It looks possibly a little nicer than mine http://www.tykroll.com/chess/moro.html which is made in some kind of ebony and not horn and has a little more basic carving except on the knights. I think I remember paying only between $100 and $150 for mine. In general these weren't big with collectors at that time and sometimes you get a deal on eBay. I've been out of the loop for a while, but I imagine they still aren't big with collectors... sets like the bone and horn, the 2 tone set, or any other particularly superb example that will stand out in a crowd will be worth much more. The set in question looks more on the level of the typical set you see on eBay from time to time... though on the good side of typical. I don't know anything about the table, how much it's worth, or if it matches the set. I'd contact Rick Knowlton http://rickknowlton.com/ who I believe knows more about these sets than most... but keep in mind he sells them, so he has somewhat of a vested interest in talking them up (no offense, Rick.)

thanks for your feedback about the chess set. We opted not to buy, but hope we come across another set in the future. The price wasn't right and the seller wasn't being super-helpful. We're hoping to go to Davao sometime and who knows- maybe we'll find one in the place they're actually made.
